 Your essential oil Starter Pack:

Lemon oil

A very popular oil used as a natural disinfectant to clean the house as well as to remove odors from the air, the trash can, shoes. Physically lemons can provide a huge benefit to the body by supporting and stimulating the nervous system, enhancing immunity, alleviating stress and supporting digestion.
Because lemons are so commonly found at your local grocery store for adequate prices you can easily pick up a few and scrape them with a knife or fork to release the wonderful smell into your home.
Ayurvedic medicine, a 5,000 year old medicinal philosophy based in India explains that lemons provide the following therapeutic properties:

  • Antiviral
  • Antibacterial
  • Immune stimulant
  • Digestive stimulant
  • Anti cancer
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Stress relieving

What are the major chemical components of lemons that make it such a super fruit?

D-limonene

The most abundantly found chemical in lemon that contributes to it’s definitive scent and taste. D-limonene is an important chemical that is normally found in the rind of the lemon fruit and has been showed to play a very important role in the management of antitumor effects, alleviating asthma and allergies as well as anti-inflammatory effects.

Alpha and Beta-pinene

A very important compound that is most abundantly found in forest trees – the quintessential pine smell. It plays a crucial role aiding as an anti-depressant as well as a natural antibacterial. A study done at the Northeast Forestry University treated gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with the essential oils of R. Officinalis which contains alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and 1,8-cineole. The study found that gram-positive bacteria were more responsive to the oil.

If you’re interested in purchasing a large bottle of lemon oil I highly recommend Majestic Pure Lemon Essential Oil for it’s affordable price, large quantity, and trusted production.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is another very popular essential oil used in a number of different modalities similarly to lemons. It’s seen in cleaning products, air fresheners and is very well known for its beneficial effects on reducing anxiety and promoting restful sleep.
Ayurvedic medicine also lists the following benefits of lavender oil:

  • Reviving the senses
  • Harmonizing the mind
  • Treatment of burns
  • Headache relief
  • Decreases high blood pressure
  • Treatment of skin disorders
  • Balancing the entire human system

Now let’s discuss some of the chemical components of lavender that contribute to its near mystical abilities.

Linalyl acetate

Linalyl acetate is an ester found in many different spices and flowering plants and is also known as Bergamiol, Bergamol and Linalool acetate. It is considered a perfume with a fruity odor that is very specific to the well known lavender smell.
The compound is very beneficial as an anti-inflammatory, significantly reducing skin inflammation and healing rashes. This can be achieved by applying the oil directly to the skin or incorporating the oil with a moisturizing topical lotion.
A study conducted in Italy in 2003 analyzed the affect of linalyl acetate and linalool on anti-inflammatory activity. The data supported the hypothesis and further suggested that all plant species that produce these compounds are also potential anti-inflammatory agents.
The compound has also been showed as an effective pain reliever, with studies showing that main was reduced during mentstruation.

Furthermore it’s been known to relax blood vessels, thereby reducing high blood pressure. This can be achieved greatly by doing a foot massage with the essential oil. I recommend using the Majestic Pure Lavender Essential Oil.

Linalool

Another very popular alcohol chemical seen in over 200 plant species. Along with it being an effective anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, it’s also been shown to promote sleep. A study from 2008 accidentally discovered the chemical’s effects on the nervous system, stating that “linalool modulates the central nervous system by producing unconsciousness and degradation of motor movements”.

Peppermint oil

This is the final of three most recommended and used essential oils available. It’s commonly seen in toothpastes and cleaning products, even as a tea to consume. It’s cooling nature leaves you feeling crisp, clean and fresh.

Ayurvedic medicine lists the following benefits of peppermint oil:

  • Remedy for cold symptoms
  • Headache relieve
  • Digestive blockage relieve

The two major chemical components are menthol and menthone, let’s discuss them further below:

Menthol

A waxy substance at room temperature, menthol is the compound that gives peppermint its distinguishable fragrance and cooling effect. Menthol can be used to alleviate minor aches and pains ranging from a tickled throat, muscle cramps and to reduce itching from sunburns.
Furthermore, there was a study conducted by the Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science and Providence University comparing the biological properties of two essential oils. It showed that the chemical had antimicrobial activity when tested against E.coli, S. Aurelius and P. aeruginosa.

Again I recommend the Majestic Pure Peppermint Essential Oil

What makes a good quality essential oil?

Essential oils are regulated under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. The Food and Health Administration is responsible for testing and regulating the quality of foods, additives, drugs, cosmetics and dietary supplements supplied to the public. Essential oils fall into either cosmetics or drugs – depending on their use. They look at the following categories to determine quality:

Plants

Organic non-GMO plants are considered better quality because of their lack of use of pesticides and chemicals that negatively impact our physical bodies. Soil quality, conditions and different species come into consideration as well.

Processing

Due to the growing popularity of the essential oil industry, it’s unfortunately really easy to find adulterated or diluted bottles of essential oil. It’s important to pay attention to the percentage of pure essential oil in comparison to the carrier oil found in the bottle.

Packaging

Because essential oils are purified, jam packed sources of good-for-you nutrients and chemical compounds, it can be very easy to degrade the quality of the oil if it is left out in heat, light or high oxygen levels. It’s important to purchase from a company that takes great care of the handling and storage of their products in order to get the most bang for your buck.
That’s great and all, but which companies out there are trustworthy?

Here’s a list of some of the companies out there that I personally love and trust to provide great quality essential oils:

doTERRA Introductory Kit

DoTERRA

Founded in 2008, doTERRA is definitely one of the pioneering representations of the essential oils industry. They create CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils, and it’s also very obvious based off of their packaging and fantastic customer service that they are the real deal.
I personally love doTERRA’s introductory Kit with the three oils I discussed above because of their intense smell, and longevity! A little truly goes a long way with this brand. My first pack lasted me a happy 6 months!

Young Living has a fantastic starter set that provides beginners with the perfect assorted of oils to educate themselves on their journey. I’ll just let the customer reviews speak for themselves!

ArtNaturals Aromatherapy Kit

Art Naturals

One of the newer companies to the industry, Art Naturals is known for their assortment of naturally made and sourced products. Their focus is on personal hygiene and they are also at very affordable prices for the brand new essential oil connoisseur.
They have an Art Naturals Starter Pack at an extremely affordable price! This one truly provides the most bang for your buck in comparison to the other two companies.

How are essential oils best applied?

Aromatherapy

Otherwise known as therapy through smell, aromatherapy helps lots of people relief stress and tension from smelling their essential oils. You can always do this by just getting a sniff from your bottle, or if you’re starting out with a small budget one of the easiest ways to implement the wonderful scent into your home is to put a few drops of the oil on a cotton ball and leave them around the house. You can place them in the trash can, in the bathroom, or even in your dresser or closet.
If you’re interested in spending a small amount (on average around $40), you can find some amazing diffusers on the market that turn the oil into a small mist that light up the frequency of the room it’s placed in. I personally use this one.

Creating a Spring Water spray

This is another amazing way to really stretch out the use of your essential oils. It provides a refreshing and cooling spray that you can carry with you in a small bottle in your purse, leave in your car, or have available in your restroom.
It’s important to purchase glass, colored spray bottles because as mentioned above pure essential oils can undergo chemical changes if left out in the sun, heat or under light. It’s also crucial to invest in purified spring water to use with your essential oils again to prevent chemical reactions that can damage the oil as well as decreasing the amount of metal present in the water. These bottles are perfect for on the go use and are at a very affordable price.

Roll-On Oil

This is a great way to carry essential oil with you in a compact manor and apply it throughout the day like you would a perfume. My only issue with roll-on essential oils is that I easily go through it much faster than if I were to use the spray or diffuser.
However, I will say that you can get a little creative and create some delicious combinations with different kinds of essential oils depending on your needs!

Here’s a link to a kit that comes with cute little stickers and all the tools you’d need to combine oils within roller bottles.

And that’s a wrap!
I hope you’ve enjoyed my input on all things essential oils 101! Please leave me any questions or thoughts in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.
